It’s possible there is something valuable lying around that’s yours, and you didn’t even know it.
No joke here, no catch.
According to the Florida Department of Financial Services, more than $1 billion of unclaimed property is in its possession, including both tangible and intangible items. Items range from rare coins and baseball cards, to dormant financial accounts.
Says DFS Chief Financial Officer Jeff Atwater, “It’s hard to imagine that a bank account or safety deposit box could get lost, but it happens, and it happens more often than you think.”
Despite how long the DFS has had property in its possession, the rightful owner may claim it. There is no statute of limitations, according to DFS.
Online treasure hunters can search for claimable items here on the FDFS Web site. They may also attend auctions, which are published on the site.
“Unclaimed money is deposited into the state school fund, where it is used for public education,” according to the Web site.
